2010 U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships To (Finally) Include Women

In an open letter to AZBilliards.com, tournament promoter Barry Behrman announced that this year's U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships will finally include women.

His letter, which is reprinted from AZBilliards.com, is below.

US Open to include ladies - An Open Letter from Barry Behrman

The time has come and I am thrilled to share this news with each of you as I believe that the majority of you will be pleased to hear about the exciting plans that we have in store for the future of the U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships. I have thought long and hard about this decision and there is no better time to share this wonderful news with our great fans, sponsors from within the billiard industry and beyond and especially with all of the players who absolutely love this great sport.

I am very pleased to announce that our 35th annual U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships slated for October 17-23rd, 2010 will be truly “open” to all players, both men and women from around the world, including of course, the USA.

After discussing this decision with my dear friends Ken Shuman, Jay Helfert, Jim Wych, Pat Fleming, Rob Sykora, and my daughter Shannon as well as many others we all believe that this is the best decision for everyone involved and most importantly the billiard industry. Upon reading the many post featured on AZBilliards, I found that 85% of the fans would like to see woman participate in the U.S. Open and if you know me, I aim to please.

This is an exciting time for all of us and a great opportunity for the U.S. Open and I plan on using this time to encourage more sponsorship, increase attendance, and of course more players and it all begins with this year, the groundbreaking , 35th Annual U.S. Open 9-ball Championships. I hope to see you there. Let’s get it on!

Congratulations Lucasi Hybrid All American Tour 35th Stop Winner Tony Maresca!!

The 35th stop on the 2009-2010 Lucasi Hybrid All American Tour (produced by the American CueSports Alliance – ACS) was hosted on March 20 in Clinton IA, at Legends Sports Bar. The $500 added event featured 32 players in a double-elimination 9-ball format on 7-foot bar boxes.

Tony Maresca (Clinton, IA) [rated a “6” on a regional handicapping system used] won the A-side bracket, including a “hill-hill” semifinals win over Tommy Fuller (Davenport, IA) [5] 6-4 and a “hill-hill” finals win over Jim Baker (Camanche, IA) [5] 6-4.

On the B-side Will Kohl (DeWitt, IA) [5] and Keith Helfrich (Dixon, IL) [6] ousted Will Thomsen (DeWitt, IA) [5] 5-4 and Woody Van Kampen (Fulton, IL) [6] 6-2 at 7th place respectively. Kohl then eliminated Tommy Fuller at 5th place by a 5-4 margin, where Fuller was tied with Keith Helfrich, who fell at the hands of Ray Fredericksen (Clinton, IA) 5-2.

Kohl then ended Ray Fredericksen’s run at 4th place, 5-2, and in the next match Kohl gained an entrance to the finals courtesy of Will’s win over Jim Baker 5-3. The tourney finals ended in one set, as Tony Maresca remained undefeated, clipping Will Kohl 5-3 for the title!

Lucasi Hybrid All American Tour sponsors include: Pool Cue Guru, Lucasi Hybrid Cues, Championship Billiard Fabric, Nick Varner Signature Cases and Billiard Gods Productions. All entries in the Tour are also entered into a drawing in June for a $950-$1,000 Lucasi Hybrid Cue.

Congratulations Lucasi Hybrid All American Tour 34th Stop Winner Tony Piazza!!

The 34th stop on the 2009-2010 Lucasi Hybrid All American Tour (produced by the American CueSports Alliance – ACS) was hosted on March 20 in Lakewood CO, at Greenfields Pool & Sports Bar. The $500 added event featured 35 players in a double-elimination 8-ball format on 7-foot Dynamo bar boxes.

Tony Piazza (Ft. Collins, CO) ended his run to the hot seat by outpointing Mark Morgan (Ft. Collins, CO) 5-2 in the A-side semifinals and Adam King (Ft. Collins, CO) 5-1 in the A-side finals. On the B-side, Mark Morgan was eliminated at 5th place at the hands of Mark Haddad (Westminster, CO) 5-1, joined by Steve Chan (Lakewood, CO) – a 5-3 victim of Ruben Silva Jr. (Colorado Springs, CO). Haddad then ousted Silva at 4th place by a 5-3 margin. Mark Haddad further won a trip to the tourney finals by virtue of his B-side finals win over Adam King (Ft. Collins, CO) 5-4. The tourney finals showcased Tony Piazza versus Mark Haddad, but Piazza dominated play with a 5-1 first-set win for the title!

By virtue of Mark Haddad being the highest-finishing ACS member in the event, he qualified for a free 8-Ball singles entry into the 2010 ACS Nationals in Las Vegas – courtesy of the ACS.

Pool, Poker & Pain Aims To Knock Pool (and Poker) On Its Ear

Blair Thein wants to knock the worlds of pool, poker and mixed martial arts on their collective ears. Thein is working on a new reality show that will combine the three sports into a multi-stage competition. Contestants will play a game of pool, followed by a hand of poker and finish with an MMA bout.

Representation and media agency PokerIcons recently joined Simonis cloth as an official show sponsor.

The press release from PokerIcons is reprinted below.

(Press release, Los Angeles & Malta, March 20, 2010)

Blair Thein has combined three of the most action-packed sports around: Pool, Poker and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), and wrapped it up in a very exiting TV reality show.

This sports and entertainment historical show will host its final live at a Las Vegas casino.

Pool, Poker & Pain introduces multi-talented athletes with heart and willpower beyond compare, and the concept is bound to bring together the masses that follow each individual sport.

Thein has constructed Pool, Poker & Pain in a way that allows each sport to keep its own integrity and identity, but at the same time the contestant have to perform in all of them to be crowned the overall winner.

"This also opens up a window of opportunity for payback in case of any bad beats at the poker table", says Blair with a smile.

The contestant will be facing each other both at the pool table, on the poker felt and finally in the circle of truth (MMA style) a 32-foot fighting cage.

There will be several world class coaches to tutor the contestants in each sport, but the poker pro coach is still undecided…

“I negotiated with most of the known poker agencies, but landed on Poker Icons to be our representatives in the gaming industry. I was really impressed with what they could bring to the table, and since this is my life's work, I'm going with only the best” - Blair explains.

Poker Icons will be responsible for bringing on the poker brand and coaches, but also the high profiled agency Brand In Entertainment (BIE) is part of the team. They bring over 35 years of main stream advertising experience, along with an impressive roster of clients who appreciate the effectiveness of brand integration.

Rolfe Auerbach, BIE - CEO comments:
"Brand-in Entertainment believes that the opportunity to profoundly change the nature of three sports – Poker, Pool and Martial Arts – in one project – opens the door to a vast array of viewers and ultimately to new buyers for the clients who integrate their products and services into Pool, Poker and Pain. Once involved in this manner, these clients will become part of the series plotline – and cannot be TiVo’d out. Additional spot advertising they buy in the series will serve to enhance their efforts to reach their consumer.”

Blair Thein, Pool, Poker & Pain founder comments:
"Pool,Poker and Pain has finally broke through to the poker industry! After 6 years creating this unique and extremely exciting concept, I am thrilled that I found Poker Icons to represent us towards the gaming industry! I really feel very blessed and honored now that both BIE and Poker Icons is fighting for this show and that my vision and dream is very close to becoming a reality!”

Per Hagen, Poker Icons - CEO comments:
“We here at Poker Icons are very happy and proud being selected by Pool, Poker & Pain to represent them in the poker industry. I have absolute no doubt that this concept will create sporting and entertainment history!”

Pool, Poker & Pain got a lot of attention in the pool and fight media, and they have already secured sponsorship deals with major main stream products and Simonis, the leading pool cloth manufactor.

Poker Icons will now start to search for a poker brand to align themselves with this global groundbreaking concept and ongoing talks with different TV networks is also under way.

Congratulations Lucasi Hybrid All American Tour 33rd Stop Winner Anthony Garcia!!

The 33rd stop on the 2009-2010 Lucasi Hybrid All American Tour (produced by the American CueSports Alliance – ACS) was hosted on March 6 in Dubuque, IA, at Bulldog Billiards. The $500 added event featured 32 players in a double-elimination 8-ball format on 7-foot bar boxes.

Anthony Garcia (Cedar Rapids, IA) – rated a “4” on a regional handicap system used – completed his undefeated route to the hot seat by topping Craig Hintgen [5] (Dubuque, IA) 4-0 in the A-side semifinals and Nate Mindham [4] (Beloit, WI) 4-1 in the A-side finals.

Filling the 7-8th spots in the final standings, Tracey Christenson [4] (Beloit, WI) was eliminated by Craig Rice [5] (Cedar Rapids, IA) 5-1, while Rich Bideaux [5] ousted Ron Pluym [5] (Dubuque, IA) 5-4. Craig Hintgen and Mason Parks [4] (E. Moline, IL) bit the dust in the next round at the hands of Craig Rice 2-5 and Rich Bideaux 3-5. Bideaux then continued on by stopping Craig Rice at 4th place 5-4 and Nate Mindham at 3rd place 5-3. However, in the tourney finals, Anthony Garcia took advantage of his one-game spot to claim the title over Rich Bideaux in the first set, 4-4!

By virtue of Anthony Garcia being the highest-finishing ACS member in the event, he qualified for a free 9-Ball singles entry into the 2010 ACS Nationals in Las Vegas – courtesy of the ACS.

Lucasi Hybrid All American Tour sponsors include: Pool Cue Guru, Lucasi Hybrid Cues, Championship Billiard Fabric, Nick Varner Signature Cases and Billiard Gods Productions. All entries in the Tour are also entered into a drawing in January for a $1,000 Lucasi Hybrid Cue.
