CSI Adds New Player Rating Category

CueSports International (CSI) has created a new rating classification: the Advanced Division. This new division includes players that rank between the already-established Open and Master Divisions.

All active Player Members have been reclassified to be included in the other singles divisions based on ability. These changes are effective June 1, 2010, and are retroactive to all players who have cashed in the singles division of the BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships since 2005, as well as in all recognized BCAPL state and regional rankings.

Read the press release from CSI below for further information.

CSI Expands BCA Pool League Player Rating Categories Adds New Division

The past two years CueSports International (CSI) analyzed the growth of player’s skill levels at the BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships and decided to create a new rating classification: the Advanced Division.

CSI has also reclassified all active Player Members to be included in the other singles divisions (based on their individual ability).

The Advanced Division was created to add a level of play that falls between the Open Division and the Master Division. The goal is to allow more players to participate and to further competitive opportunity.

The following new Advancement Criteria is effective June 1, 2010 and is retroactive to all players who have cashed in the singles divisions of the BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships since 2005 and all recognized BCAPL state and regional rankings.

The past two years CueSports International (CSI) analyzed the growth of player’s skill levels at the BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships and decided to create a new rating classification: the Advanced Division.

Top 8 from Men's Player Member Singles Master Advanced
Top 2 from Women's Player Member Singles Master Advanced
Top 6 from Men's Senior Singles Master Advanced
Top 3 from Women's Senior Singles Master Advanced

Team Masters:
All Team Masters will be placed on the Advanced player list. The Team Master category is based on an individual’s participation on a team’s finish at the BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships.

State Masters:
Players who are currently listed in their state as a Master player (but who have not participated in the BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships) may remain as a Master or be moved down to the Advanced Division based on known ability and state and regional tournament results from 2005 – 2010.

Player Members:
All new Player Members, beginning June 1, 2010 will be required to enter the Advanced or higher Singles Divisions, ranked based on known ability. New and established Player Members (who have not cashed) may request consideration to enter the Open Division, but will be assessed individually.

Players on the Advanced list may petition the BCAPL to be removed. The Advanced category is based on individual play. If we have a tournament history of that player in singles that indicates that they are not an Advanced level player, they may be removed from the list and put back into the Open division.

Petition Procedure:
All requested to be removed from the either the Advanced, Master, Grand Master or Team Master list must be in writing. Telephone requests will not be accepted. Either email or mail your requests to:

NYC Grind's Kiss of Death Web Series Episode 10: "Hard Eight"

The tenth episode of NYC Grind's web series "Kiss of Death" is now available. This series, which originally airs weekly on YouTube and Blip.tv (Thursdays at 8:00 p.m. EST), follows the ladies of the team "Kiss of Death" throughout the weeks leading up to the BCAPL National 8-Ball Championships, where they will compete in the Masters Team Division.

In this episode ("Hard Eight"), team Kiss of Death competes in the Masters Division for the first time in Las Vegas in the 34th Annual BCAPL 8-ball Championships. Team Captain Gail Glazebrook went through the field of 402 Women to capture the Women's Open 8-Ball Championships earlier in the event, and the team looked to build on that success. KOD also sweats the US Open 10-Ball Championships which ran in conjunction with the BCAPL team event. Be sure to watch the video for a mash up of billiards action in Vegas. This episode is longer than most of the episodes, as to pack in as much of the action as possible.

A Pool Shark Robot, Oh My!

Geeky but awesome. Check out Willow Garage's new pool shark robot, the PR2. This guy may look like an easy mark, but the PR2 doesn't rely on remote controls wielded by humans to make its shots. Instead, it utilizes two high-resolution cameras equipped with a "color blob tracker" and special software to plan its shots.

While we're safe from being hustled by robots for now, this guy was developed in only one week and pocketed five balls during his "exhibition."

2010 World Cup Nations Announced

THE PARTYPOKER.NET WORLD CUP OF POOL will once again take place in Manila following last year’s hugely successful event in the Philippines. Taking place from Tuesday to Sunday 7th to 12th September, the event will feature 32 two-player teams shooting for a $250,000 prize fund.

Leading the way will be defending champions Efren Reyes and Francisco Bustamante, whose heroics last year lifted the nation as they beat Germany 11-9 in one of the most exciting finals in pool history.

That was the second time in the tournament’s four year run that the Filipino veterans have lifted the coveted trophy and with the host nation having the honour of fielding two teams in the event, they will be joined by recent World Pool Masters Champion Dennis Orcollo and Roberto ‘Superman’ Gomez as Team ‘B’.

Other stars of the pool world scheduled to take part include World Champions Ralf Souquet and Oliver Ortmann (Germany), Daryl Peach and Karl Boyes of England, Johnny Archer (USA) and Finland’s Mika Immonen.

Other top draws appearing in Manila are Marcus Chamat (Sweden), Niels Feijen of Holland, Malta’s Tony Drago and a host of big names to be announced.

The entire event will be broadcast by Solar Sports live across the Philippines with the live feed of the tournament available internationally. In addition Matchroom Sport will be producing a 31 x one hour highlights package of the event.

Commented Matchroom Sport Chairman Barry Hearn, “We are delighted to be returning to the Philippines after having enjoyed last year one of the greatest pool tournaments we have ever promoted.

“Solar Sports did a fantastic job bringing all the drama and excitement of the tournament to the screen and the large, enthusiastic crowds created an atmosphere unlike any I have ever seen at a pool tournament.

“The World Cup of Pool is fast becoming the biggest pool tournament in the world and we are delighted to see its continued growth in Asia and around the world.”

Professor Q-Ball Performs Pool Magic

This is pretty cool.

Watch Professor Q-Ball Paul Frankel perform his recently-revised but still amazing "Magic Moment with 16 Balls" magic trick demonstrated recently at High Pockets in Memphis, Tennessee.

The refined "Magic Moment" takes two hours to set up (the original took three) and the number of card decks used has been reduced. The original "Magic Moment" was performed for the Dr. Cue International Talent Search, "In Search Of Cue-Dean-E" in November 2009. Professor Q-Ball was one of eight audition finalists.

New Smart Phone App Calculates Break Speed

Break Speed is a pretty cool little app for the iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch, BlackBerry/BlackBerry Touch, and Windows Mobile devices that calculates distance and time to give you the speed of your break. This app was debuted live during the 2010 US Open 10-Ball Championship, providing live break speeds for the first time ever during a professional event.

Sounds Kinda Cool. How Is This Going To Help My Game?

This app, which according to the developers is more than ten times more accurate than a radar gun, can help you to break harder, make more balls and win more games.

Want to know what effect a small change like grip position has on your game? This app will tell you what effect any changes you make to your game has on your break speed.

Want to know how you really perform under pressure? If you're stressed in a tournament, there's no way your break will be up to speed. This app will make you more aware of how you handle pressure, so you can work better to overcome anxiety and stay cool no matter what.

How Does It Work?

From the developers:

Speed calculation requires distance and time (hence, we say "55 miles per hour".)
Break Speed calculates the distance automatically when you select your table and cue ball position. Time is calculated by listening to your break shot very carefully to find the exact moments in time where the cue tip hits the cue ball and where the cue ball hits the rack.

Automatic break recognition requires the use of advanced audio analysis algorithms engineered specifically for Break Speed. This technology is capable of telling the difference between your break, and the player breaking at the table next to you. Our Break Recognition is very effective at discerning your break from the ambient noise in the room - we have even captured break speeds of players from across the pool room (with music playing!)*

* Some functionality is device-dependent (see FAQ for more details)

How Can I Get In On This?

The developers of Break Speed are so confident this app will help your game, they're giving away a trial version that includes 10 free breaks. Check it out at their website. If you like the app, the full version is available for $5.99.

About Me

Las Vegas, Nevada
I love pool! Especially cues...I have over 35 cues personally and seem to find a new reason to get one all the time. I started PoolCueGuru.com to support my cue buying habit and I love it!
