Tune In To Watch Gareth Steele & Steve Reynolds Attempt To Grab Guinness World Record For Longest Marathon Billiards Match

Gareth Steele and Steve Reynolds will make a run to grab the Guinness World Record for the Longest Marathon Billiards Match starting at 10:00 a.m. EST on Wednesday, December 1, 2010. The event will be streamed live with score updates at www.newengland9ball.com.

A press release with further information is below.

World Record Attempt to be streamed

An attempt to surpass the current Guinness Book of World Records for the “Longest Marathon Billiards Match” will be made by Gareth Steele of New England 9-Ball and Steve Reynolds of TJ's Classic Billiards. These committed players have teamed up to shoot for a record attempt of 100 grueling hours of continuous billiard play to benefit the Billiard Education Foundation (BEF).

The current Guinness record is held by Rikki Cunningham from Greensboro, North Carolina. Cunningham played pool at Shooter's Sports Bar & Billiard for 72 hours, setting the world title record for the “Longest Marathon Billiards Match” on August 28, 2009.

The Guinness Book of World Records event will take place at TJ's Classic Billiards in Waterville, Maine. The crack of the balls will begin at 10:00 am, Wednesday, December 1st, 2010. The “Longest Marathon Billiard Match” schedule is as follows: 9-Ball Race to 100; Straight Pool Race to 1000; 8-Ball Race to 100; One Pocket Race to 20; 9-Ball Race to End.

The event will be streamed LIVE with score updates at www.newengland9ball.com. All proceeds and donations made through this incredible marathon will go to the BEF to support youth billiards programs. Inspire the youth of today to take the game of pool into tomorrow. Visit www.newengland9ball.com to make a contribution and to show your support for Steele and Reynolds.

Like Pool and Computer Programming? Have We Got A Tournament For You!

If you can write software and like pool, this may just be the competition for you! The Fourth Annual Computational Billiards Championships (ICBC-11) will be held in July and August of 2011, with the finals taking place during the AAAI-11 Conference in San Francisco from August 7-11, 2011. Entry is free and remote participation is possible, so you do not have to travel to the finals.

The ICBC-11 is designed to advance research in computational pool and give researchers a place to compare and test their ideas. Software programs will compete in a simulated game of pool, deciding automatically which shot to attempt in any situation to see which program performs the best.

For further information, visit the tournament website.

Strickland Endorses USA Pool League

Earl "The Pearl" Strickland endorses the new USA Pool League "USAPL" created by CueSports International.

The new pool league was created to solve some of the issues commonly associated with other national handicapped pool leagues, such as "sandbagging" and tight team handicap limits. USAPL would allow all players to enter national championships, regardless of whether they participated in local or regional tournaments; and would give at least half of all monies collected back to amateur league players and a sizeable portion to help promote professional players.

A CueSports International press release on the endorsement is reprinted below.

Strickland Endorses USA Pool League - Calling for a Pool “Revolution”

Earl “The Pearl” Strickland is one if not the most decorated U.S. player of his generation. Equally passionate about the sport, “the Pearl” and industry leader CueSports International (CSI) both agree it is time for a “revolution in pool” and that revolution is the USA Pool League (USAPL).

In his 27 years as a professional pool player Strickland’s record include 5 world championships, a record holding 5 U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships, and participating on the U.S. Mosconi Cup Team an astounding 13 times. In the past several years Strickland has devoted much of his time to holding clinics and exhibitions, including from 2008 – 2010 as a member of Team CSI. For his extraordinary accomplishments Strickland was inducted in the BCA Hall of Fame in 2006. While a member of Team CSI, Strickland became more aware of the goals CSI has for the new USAPL.

Believing many of the issues commonly associated with national handicapped pool leagues should be addressed CSI launched the USAPL in late 2009. Some of the issues the USAPL is designed to tackle are “sandbagging” and the constricting policies of tight team handicap limits. Additionally, CSI believes all players should be allowed to enter national championships to test themselves should they choose and not rely on a pyramid of local and regional tournaments in order to be allowed to compete at the national level. This is a philosophy that “the Pearl” also believes – that all players should be allowed to play.

Strickland additionally endorses the USAPL because CSI set up the USAPL to give at least 50% of all monies collected back to the amateur league members on the local level and a sizable portion of CSI’s USAPL proceeds into developing more exposure and support of professional players. “The USAPL is a league that works on behalf of the players, not one where the players work for the league. CSI puts its money where its mouth is. This I can get behind”, said Strickland.

CSI is actively recruiting and screening prospective USAPL Managers. All USAPL Managers have free protected territories and use the LeagueSys online scoring and scheduling system. Currently there are active USAPL leagues in 11 U.S. states including: Missouri, Nevada, New York, North Carolina, Alabama, Indiana, Oklahoma, Florida, Michigan, Colorado and Maryland with new leagues being organized and developed almost weekly all over the U.S.

CueSports International is dedicated to creating more choices for all players. CSI is the parent company of the BCA Pool League and the USA Pool League. CSI also produces independent events such as the U.S. Bar Table Championships, the Jay Swanson Memorial and the U.S. Open 10-Ball Championship.
