On August 22, 2010, Johnny Archer rose to the top, defeating Rodney Morris 13-8 in the finals to take his sixth Turning Stone title. Sound like a repeat? Morris also finished second to Archer in the December 2009 Turning Stone event. Strangely enough, Dennis Hatch took third at both events. With this win, Archer has also gained the number one spot in the BCA rankings.

WPBA Superstars To Go Head To Head With Top Male Pros At The 2010 PartyPoker.net World Cup Of Pool

WPBA superstars Ga Young Kim, Yu Ram Cha and Jasmin Ouschan are slated to compete at the 2010 PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool against top male pros Johnny Archer, Daryl Peach, Rodney Morris, Dennis Orcollo, Niels Feijen, Mika Immonen, Oliver Ortmann, Karl Boyes, Jianbo Fu, Tony Drago and Marcus Chamat.

The 2010 PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool will be held from Tuesday, September 7 through Sunday, September 12 at the Midtown Wing of Robinsons Place in Ermita, Manila, The Phillippines. The competition will feature 32 two-person teams representing 31 countries battling it out for the $250,000 prize fund.

A related WPBA press release is reprinted below.

WPBA Players Proudly Represent Respective Countries in PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool

The WPBA congratulates exempt WPBA pro’s selected to compete in the 2010 PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool. The competition will be held in Manila, Philippines at the Midtown Wing of Robinsons Place in Ermita, Manila from Tuesday, September 7th to Sunday, September 12th and will feature 32 teams (2) person teams, representing 31countries.

Women’s Professional Billiards Association superstars Ga Young Kim, Yu Ram Cha, and Jasmin Ouschan are set to compete against the best of the best in male competition. Top male professionals include Johnny Archer, Daryl Peach, Rodney Morris, Dennis Orcollo, Niels Feijen, Mika Immonen, Oliver Ortmann, Karl Boyes, Jianbo Fu, Tony Drago and Marcus Chamat who will all be firing at a $250,000 prize fund.

Kim and Cha will make up the only “all female” team. These two heavy hitters pack a lot of firepower and routinely take on and take down some of the toughest male competition around. Cha has proven herself to be a more than worthy opponent when pitted against her male counterparts. She has career wins over Shane VanBoening, Thorsten Hohmann, and her own coach, Charlie Williams, just to name a few. When asked about how she feels about being part of the only all female team, Yu Ram responded, “As the only “all female” team, I feel a small burden to play well. I guess I will learn from the world’s best players!” When asked about her feelings going into the event and her new teammate, Yu Ram responds, "I am very excited and I can't wait to play. I missed not participating in this event last year due to circumstances beyond my control. I will do my best in upcoming matches with my partner, Ga Young. She is a veteran and has more experience than me. She and I have never played together so I am a little bit worried. On the other hand, I am very excited to play with her. Due to the importance of teamwork, I am trying to harmonize with her.” Kim and Cha will be up against team Italy, Bruno Muratore and Fabio Patroni, in the first round.

In addition, Austrian native Jasmin Ouschan will also join the mix. Ouschan, who is no stranger to the toughest of competition, finished 3rd in the World Straight Pool Championships where she defeated the #1 seed, Mika Immonen and top German pro, Oliver Ortmann on her way to the semi-finals. “It is an honor again to be selected to play in the World Cup of Pool. This year will be my third time and the best result was the fifth place in 2008. This year I am playing with a young upcoming player from Austria and I hope we can beat the fifth place from 2008. It is a tough event especially since there is no losers’ round but we are strong together and I hope we can show it in Manila‚” explained Ouschan. She will pair up with Mario He in this 32 team format and will face off with Holland’s Neils Fejien and Huidji See in the first round.

Event sponsor Luke Riches of Matchroom Sport says, “We always enjoy having female players in the PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool and will endeavour to include more as the standards rise. The ladies bring a different dimension to the tournament and they can play!”

Billiards As Fine Art--"The Rack" at Fargo Billiards by Kim Bromley

If you ever get the chance to visit Fargo, North Dakota, check out "The Rack"; a really cool billiards art installation at Fargo Billiards by Assistant Professor, Hypnotherapist and professional artist Kimble Bromley.

THE RACK
Artist’s Statement
Kim Bromley
Painting these paintings of pool balls presented a great opportunity to mix pool with fine art. As an artist I used my knowledge of the game of pool to create these works, drawing on artistic influences and other information researched for each individual painting. These sixteen paintings together form the rack of billiard balls typically found on a pool table: 1-8 solids, 9-15 stripes, and the cue ball. All the paintings were created with the same basic format or composition using the cohesiveness of the “rack” as the guiding concept. Each painting was painted with a uniquely different idea in mind according to its color, number, stripe or solid. Sizes of the canvases are proportional to a pool table. My challenge was to come up with a uniquely different idea for each of the balls. I drew upon my knowledge of art history, painting and pool to complete “The Rack.” More

The twelfth and final episode of NYC Grind's web series "Kiss of Death" is now available. This series, presented by Poison Billiards and Amsterdam Billiard Club, followed the ladies of team "Kiss of Death" throughout the weeks leading up to the BCAPL National 8-ball Championships, where the team competed in the Masters Team Division for the first time after going undefeated in the Women's Open Championship in 2009 in a field of 143 teams.

In this episode ("Down the Bunny Hole"), Kiss of Death meets up at Amsterdam Billiards to reflect on their journey throughout the web series both on and off the table. ACS and CCS Updates & Standardizes Tournament Formats and Player Rankings

Joining the APA and BCA, the American CueSports Alliance (ACS) has teamed up with the Canadian CueSport Association (CCS) to update and standardize their tournament formats and player rankings between the two affiliated organizations.

The biggest change to the ACS is adoption of the top level "Advanced" Division and "Advanced" Player Ranking. The changes will be effective for the 2011 ACS Nationals to be held from May 7-14, 2011 at the Tropicana in Las Vegas, Nevada.

For more information, check out the ACS press release below.

ACS Updates its Formats and Rankings for the 2011 ACS Nationals at the Tropicana Las Vegas

The American CueSports Alliance (ACS) has teamed up with the Canadian Cue Sport Association (CCS) to update and standardize the Tournament Formats and Player Rankings between the two affiliated organizations.

For ACS, the biggest change is the adoption of a new top level ‘Advanced’ Division for all Events and a new ‘Advanced’ Player Ranking, which the CCS has used since its incorporation six years ago.

Here is a full summary of all the changes which will be effective for the 2011 ACS Nationals, May 7-14, at the Tropicana Las Vegas:

1. Divisions
  • The ACS will now offer Divisions categorized as Standard, Open and Advanced for all events – Singles, Scotch Doubles and Team – for both 8Ball and 9Ball, where applicable.
  • There will no longer be a Division category labeled as Master in any event.
2. ‘Bump Up’ Ratio
  • The player and team ‘bump up’ ratio for both the 8Ball Singles and 8Ball Team events will be set at 12% between Standard / Open and 12% between Open / Advanced.
  • This ratio is being applied retroactively to 2005.
3. Player Rankings
  • All players will be given a separate Singles Player Ranking and a Team Player Ranking of either C - Standard, B – Open, A - Advanced or M – Master.
  • The Player Rankings will be based on the highest of their last 2 Performance Rankings in the 8Ball Singles event and the 8Ball Team event, as follows:
Advanced
(i) Finished in top 12% - M Master
(i) Finished in money but not top 12% - A Advanced
(ii) Finished out of money – B Open

Open
(i) Finished in top 12% - A Advanced
(ii) Finished in money but not top 12% - B Open
(iii) Finished out of money – C Standard

Standard
(i) Finished in top 12% - B Open
(ii) Finished in money but not top 12% - C Standard
(iii) Finished out of money – C Standard
  • This means that there will now be a full performance history for every player who has played in these two events regardless of their finishes.
  • Since your Player Ranking will be based on the highest of your last two finishes, any move up is immediate but the move down will only happen after you come back and finish out of the money in (2) consecutive appearances at the ACS Nationals.
  • There will be no automatic dropdown for those with an M – Master Player Ranking.
  • A Player’s Team Ranking cannot be lower than their Singles Ranking.
  • The ACS will continue to recognize the Player Ranking Lists of both the VNEA and the BCAPL and ACS administration will have the right to assign Player Rankings based on KA – Known Ability.
  • The ACS Player Ranking Records will be maintained in an online database accessible by everyone on both the ACS and CCS websites by September 1, 2010..
4. 8Ball Team Event Restrictions
  • The above Team Player Rankings will be applied as follows:
Advanced – No restriction as to the number of A Advanced or M Masters players.
Open – Maximum (1) A Advanced player or (1) M Master player.
Standard – Maximum (1) B Open player. No A Advanced or M Master players.

5. 8Ball Entry Fees
  • A progression has been given to the 8Ball Entry Fees between the Divisions:
Singles – Standard $125, Open $150, Advanced $175
Team – Standard $200, Open $300, Advanced $400

6. Original Member Rule
  • The ‘Original Member Rule’ has been eliminated for all Advanced Team divisions.
  • The ‘Original Member Rule’ has been eliminated for all Women’s Team divisions.
  • The ‘3 Original Member Rule’ will remain in effect for Men’s/Mixed Standard and Men’s/Mixed Open Team divisions.
  • The ‘Same League Rule’ will continue to be in effect for all Team events.
7. ACS Hotel Room Voucher Program
  • The economic reality today for the ACS Nationals to remain in Las Vegas and be at a host property like the very desirable Tropicana, is that the majority of players must support the host property by staying there during the tournament.
  • If they don’t, then the deal that the ACS struck with the Tropicana no longer works financially, the ACS would be subject to very severe financial penalties and any future Event would be in jeopardy.
  • In dealing with this critical issue and to encourage players to stay at the Tropicana, the ACS Board felt it had no choice but to introduce a Hotel Voucher Fee with every entry to the ACS Nationals.
  • So, if you stay at the Tropicana, the Hotel Room Voucher acts like a Room Deposit and you will have prepaid a part of your Room Bill.
  • If you don’t stay at the Tropicana, the unredeemed Hotel Room Voucher will be used to help offset any financial penalties charged to the ACS by the Tropicana.
  • The Hotel Room Voucher amount per Entry at the ACS Vegas 2011 Nationals are as follows:
$50 – Singles
$50 – Scotch Doubles
$75 – 9 Ball Team (3 player)
$100 – 8 Ball Team Womens (4 player)
$125 – 8 Ball Team Mens Mixed (5 player)

The ACS is very excited with the move to the Tropicana Las Vegas in early May and complete information and entry forms will be posted on the ACS website – www.americancuesports.org – by September 1, 2010.
